I do think some of its dialog windows are too small, so I always resource edit those dialogs to make viewing long file names and URLs much easier

This often equals false positives where a safe files is similar enough to a virus files that it gets flagged. installing the mods manually is better anyways, so may as well just not get the mod manager if you don't trust it. Too late and it's a hundred time's easier. It really isn't that much easier, but manual installing is still better.

FDM is the best imo, since it offers everything for free. You can pirate IDM's software which is even better. On Linux, aria2 would be minimal and efficient, unless you want with GUI then FDM would be a good choice. XDM is open source and works better than FDM.
